When I became a Zumba instructor; the first gig I landed was teaching a Zumba Kids class through my part time job at the children's activity center in my health club. My job was to teach a 45 minute class that involved music and dance from songs all over the world. Although I was nervous, I quickly learned that children love music and love to dance. All I had to do was provide a safe & encouraging space for them to do it. I learned through teaching that it's okay to be silly and to have fun. Letting loose allows you to move and to smile which in turn helps you feel good. I learned that the fun environment I had with kids also worked in my adult classes. I simply just started my classes saying "Let's just have fun!" - and the relief I get once I share those words literally tells me that all of the anxiousness and nerves eases a bit. Everyone smiles and knows that the judgement is left at the door.
Here are some of my favorite ways to let loose and to dance judgement free whether you're in a class, having a dance party with friends (or kids!) or by yourself:
MUSIC is key! The tunes make a difference. Playing a popular song especially from the old school always sets the tone just right. If you can sing along to the song - it's a plus!
Props! Grab a "microphone" and that can mean anything; a ruler, a spatula or a water bottle. Imagination goes a long way and it takes you to another "world". Props are fun. My favorite props in a Zumba class are scarfs! They are pretty and festive.
Fun attire - pick up a t-shirt with a fun saying, a bright color or maybe cut into a cute design. It helps to bring out the "dancer" in you!
*Check out the link below about the "Soulful Girls Club" which is a program that is run through The Soul Project organization. Once a month this club meets on a Friday night to have fun and I had the honor to host a few Zumba Kids classes. The rule is to have fun and let loose. The girls of this program show you how to simply just do that and believe me when I tell you; the smiles will give you all of the feels.
