I don't know about you but I have countlessly canceled my workout plans when going to the health club on my own. I've learned that it is a lot harder to cancel if you make plans with a friend (or an accountability partner!) and I know .... that is easier said than done.
As a fitness instructor I have been able to observe friendships built in classes and have learned tips to build a personal movement community.
Here's what I've learned what works:
1. Introduce yourself to the instructor!
Whenever someone has introduced themselves to me before or after a class, that connection has gone a long way. I have been able to introduce them to other class participants which supports a sense of community and also leads to a friendly environment. Physical Fitness environments can feel intimidating at first however support from a friendly face (and instructor!) can help combat that feeling.
2. Try a new class with a friend!
Whenever a friend has mentioned a new class they want to try or has tried previously, my first reaction is "I'm in!" Trying a class together provides
a safe space for protection if you run into any trouble mentally, physically or even medically. Having someone there is like having a support blanket and then after discussing what worked and what didn't work so you can do it again brings on more fun and a challenge.
3. Participate in an event!
Dance Fitness class events, Road Races and Yoga in the Park are just a few of the many events that help provide a fun atmosphere to enjoying movement with a friend. Usually events add a sense of excitement with additional benefits and perks such as: Light Bites after, Race day medals, discounts to a popular store but most of all FUN! Attending events with friends has been a huge help for me to stay motivated with my movement.
4. Ask a friend who has similar goals and make a plan! It could be meeting once a week for a fun spin class or planning a walking date. The goal is to support and have fun while moving.
Let me know if you have any additional tips for finding an accountability partner - class communities and weekly dates are just a few.
